The glorious buildings of the past
Castle Gates House is a grade 2* listed property in Shrewsbury town centre. Restoring the accommodation and facilities of this beautiful house without loosing the historical beauty and it’s period feel required both skill and careful attention to detail.
The external timber frame and panels had been painted for some years in modern plasticised paints. These coatings form a barrier trapping moisture within the timber structure. Adding central heating to this moist cocktail would have created a haven for fungal and insect infestation.
The removal of these modern barrier paints and there replacement with traditional lime based coatings has allowed the building frame to dry below levels susceptible to attack while internal comfort levels are considerably enhanced.
New bedrooms and a large family bathroom were created on the second floor where previously water tanks and services had been housed. Two new bathrooms were created to service the three bedrooms on the first floor which themselves were completely restored.
